Beach Parking

Beach parking, straight answers

Legal and signed only. If a spot is free because enforcement is spotty, that's a ticket waiting to happen, not a tip. Here's what's actually posted.

The one people get wrong

The free library state park day-use pass does not cover Huntington Dog Beach. Dog Beach is city-run, its parking meters are Huntington Beach city parking, not a state fee station, so state passes don't apply there.

What the free state pass covers, and what it doesn't

State day-use passes (including the library-checkout pass) work only at facilities operated by California State Parks, think Huntington State Beach or Bolsa Chica State Beach, not the city-run lots and meters covered above. Dog Beach, the Main Promenade lots, and Seal Beach's beach lots are all city or local operations. If a lot has a city logo on the sign, a state pass isn't the answer.

Common questions

Does the free library state park pass cover Dog Beach?

No. Huntington Dog Beach is run by the City of Huntington Beach's Marine Safety Division, not California State Parks. Its meters are city parking, not a state day-use fee. State park passes, including the library-checkout California State Library Parks Pass, only apply at California State Parks facilities (like Huntington State Beach or Bolsa Chica State Beach). Bring quarters, a card, or a city annual permit for Dog Beach; the state pass does nothing there.

What does the Huntington Beach annual parking pass actually cover?

The city annual beach parking permit ($195 general, $100 senior/disabled, $125 veteran, $400 oversized as of August 2026) is valid at Main Promenade and City Beach lots. Confirm current coverage and price before buying at the city's official parking page, since rates change.

Is there free street parking near the beach in Huntington Beach?

Not near the sand. HB's beachfront lots and Pacific Coast Highway meters run 6 a.m. to midnight daily, including holidays, and the citywide 10 p.m.–5 a.m. beach curfew is enforced. Free spots exist further inland in residential streets, but check posted signage, since preferential parking zones and time limits are common near downtown.

What does a Seal Beach resident parking permit cover?

Seal Beach's residential permit ($20/year, Nov 1–Oct 31, license-plate verified) covers residential zone parking, not the beach lots. Beach lot access (1st, 8th, and 10th Street lots) is a separate annual permit: $117 for residents, $70 for qualifying seniors, $180 for non-residents.

Checked August 2026. Rates, permit prices, and hours change, the city pages linked above are the source of record, not this page.
